We all know we’re not where we need or want to be.

You don’t have to be a Christian to acknowledge there’s a mountain between us and God. Most world religions believe this is true, and they’ve all tried to come up with solutions to the problem.

Sure, there are some religions that choose to ignore the mountain, claiming it’s not really there. But the honest ones know the truth. And the man-made solution is always to find the best way to climb the mountain.

How startling it is when we look up and realize that our help is coming down to us.

That’s not what we expected. We expected to have to muster up all our strength. We expected to have to believe in ourselves. We expected to work our tails off trying to get to God.

The tragedy is that there are so many mountain climbers. There are so many people focused on trying to shimmy up the mountain of success, the mountain of pleasure, the mountain of good works, the mountain of whatever god they’re trying to obtain. They’re so busy climbing the mountain they miss the very real God coming down not only to meet them, but to give them the help they need.

With a tone of tragedy, John says it like this:

The true light which gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.
John 1:9-11

Many lift their eyes to the mountain to see how far they have to climb. But in Psalm 121, David lifted his eyes to the mountain and saw the Lord coming to help. I don’t know if David meant to be prophetic, but the Lord definitely spoke prophetically through David many times throughout the Psalms. The mountain of separation between us and God simply isn’t scalable by any mere man. It would take a God-man. And that is exactly what was promised to the people of God: a God-man who would come down to our level to help us do what we could never do on our own.

Jesus is your great Help. That’s why He came all the way from Heaven to dwell among us. To suffer with us. To lift us up on His broad and strong shoulders. To pay the price we could never pay. The great Maker of all things is your Helper.

Be encouraged today. Rest easy. You don’t have to strive to accomplish the impossible. Simply lift your eyes and let the Lord be your help. Lift your eyes to the historical death and resurrection of Jesus. Lift your eyes to the Word of God. Lift your eyes in prayer. Help will come. He is ready to help you today and every day.
