“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Psalm 119:105

God’s Word is helpful in a practical way.

At times, it’s like a recipe for life or a guide for decision making. It’s a wonderful thing to ponder the Words of God during times of stillness, but at some point we have to get up and live the rest of our lives.

God’s Word can go with us in our everyday moments. It can light up our way, illuminating our path. Helping us to se ourselves and he situation we find ourselves in clearly.

God’s Word is also referred to as a sword. (Hebrews 4:12) It’s something that you can pick up and fight with! A sword is tangible and practical. It’s something you reach for when you need it. There have been too many times that I’ve found myself in a mental battle — and I found that I didn’t have a sword to grab onto. When lies are pouring into your mind and heart, how are you going to grab onto the truth if you don’t know it? We have a resource, a sword, a manual, a map, a light — and I fear that we rarely use it to our advantage.

One of my favorite books in the Bible is the book of Proverbs. By nature, I’m very strategic and logical and I truly believe that the practicalness of Proverbs is one of the things that God used to pull me deeper into a love for His Word. It’s a great thing to explore the beautiful, epic mysteries of God and His Word. But there are times when we just needed very clear direction. A clear next step.

The Lord will use His Word to guide you and give you wisdom in how to deal with various circumstances in life. If you’re praying for guidance in a situation, I wonder — are you pressing into the Word? The Lord will likely speak to you there. He will likely lead and you and guide you through His Word.

What if God’s Word isn’t old and outdated. What if it’s living and active? What if it is sharp and able to pierce through hearts and situations?    Would we approach it differently if this were true? Well, it is true. If you’ll let it, God’s Word will be a light to your feet too.
